Extraction from Coordinate Structures: Evidence from Language

چکیده
1 Introduction Decades of psycholinguistic research have witnessed a sustained interest in whether syntactic island constraints are active during online processing the study of syntactic islands seeks to identify environments in which filler-gap dependencies are banned. But to these generalizations, there are, of course, exceptions. One of the more resilient island constraints is Ross's (1967) Coordinate Structure Constraint (CSC), although it, too, admits systematic counterexamples. The focus of this paper is on one such counterexample to the CSC – extraction from so-called 'pseudo-coordination' structures – and its treatment in online processing. At the center of this paper is the following long-recognized puzzle: why is the filler-gap dependency licensed in the pseudo-coordination structure (1a), but not the seemingly identical structure (1b)?

Metalinguistic Awareness and Bilingual vs. Monolingual EFL Learners: Evidence from a Diagonal Bilingual Context
This paper reports a study of 85 Iranian EFL learners in the English Language Department of Urmia University. It explores the possible differences between performance of 38 Persian monolingual and 47 Turkish-Persian bilingual EFL learners on metalinguistic tasks of ungrammatical structures and translation. The underlying hypothesis is that bilinguals in diagonal bilingual contexts experience a ...
متن کاملMirror Neurons and (Inter)subjectivity: Typological Evidence from East Asian Languages
Language is primarily constituted by action and interaction based on sensorimotor information. This paper demonstrates the nature of subjectivity and intersubjectivity through the neural mechanism and typological evidence of sentence-final particles from East Asian languages and extends to the discussion of the relationship between them. I propose that intersubjecivity is a kind of embedded or ...
متن کاملNeuropsychological Double Dissociation between Linguistic Levels: Clinical Linguistic Evidence from Iranian Aphasic Patients
Introduction: In this paper we report on clinical linguistic applications of several versions of the Bilingual Aphasia Test (BAT) and the Persian Aphasia Battery (PAB) developed to assess patterns of recovery and language impairments in monolingual and bilingual aphasics with different clinical histories living in Iran. Methods: The participants are adult monolingual native speakers of Persian ...
متن کاملPresenting a method for extracting structured domain-dependent information from Farsi Web pages
Extracting structured information about entities from web texts is an important task in web mining, natural language processing, and information extraction. Information extraction is useful in many applications including search engines, question-answering systems, recommender systems, machine translation, etc. An information extraction system aims to identify the entities from the text and extr...
متن کاملMulti-core Structural SVM Training
Many problems in natural language processing and computer vision can be framed as structured prediction problems. Structural support vector machines (SVM) is a popular approach for training structured predictors, where learning is framed as an optimization problem. Most structural SVM solvers alternate between a model update phase and an inference phase (which predicts structures for all traini...
